High-lights: Flying below the elegant Queen Juliana Bridge, spanning the entrance to the harbor; Observe Fort Amsterdam and Fort Nassau and look down on the dolphins in their natural habitat. Fly over the Gold Coast of Spanish Lagoon, where the rich and famous have their mansions.
Short history: In 1634 a group of colonists from Amsterdam (Hence the name Fort Amsterdam at the entrance of the harbor) in search of treasure settled here. The Dutch West Indian Company, backed by the Dutch Crown, claimed Curacao. The island soon began to prosper under Dutch rule and became an important trading center, making it a ripe target for pirates and buccaneers.
After take-off we pass below the Queen Juliana Bridge (named after the late Dutch Queen Mother). Flying low over the St Anna Bay, dividing the city through the middle, we fly right by the quaint waterfront trading houses of the early 18th century designed after the gabled houses in Amsterdam. The Swinging Old Lady (the pontoon bridge), unique in the world patiently lets us soar over, after which we continue up the coast. Along the shoreline we see beautiful beaches and observe the dolphins at Seaquarium in their natural habitat. Then we skim over the inland lagoon Spanish Water, where even the notorious pirate Henry Morgan, the Pirate King, found refuge once, where now the rich and famous have built their mansions.
